Waupaca group grows city farm market

The Waupaca City Farm Market will have a grand opening from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday June 29.

Face painting, crafts for children and a petting zoo will be featured, along with lots of local produce.

Honey, maple syrup, strawberries, grassfed beef, chicken, pork, lamb, eggs, assorted pickles and jams, early season vegetables, candy and more will be available for purchase.

The city farm market features an expanded market on Saturday mornings and afternoons on the city square at the corners of Main and Fulton streets in downtown Waupaca.

This year, a special market has been added on Wednesdays from 2-6 p.m., with some produce available on the square all week long (weather permitting).

The Wednesday afternoon and Saturday markets are hosted by the Sustainable Community Initiative organization (SCI), a group of local citizens who have organized to promote a resilient local economy based on local agriculture.

“For every dollar that’s spent with a local farmer, another two to three dollars stays in the community,” said Bonni Miller, secretary of SCI. “We all know it’s important to shop locally, and you can’t get much more local than the wonderful food that’s grown right here in beautiful Waupaca County.”
