UPDATE: Tornado confirmed in New London

The National Weather Service office in Green Bay confirmed that Wednesday’s storm included two tornadoes.

One tornado hit New London around 12:30 a.m., where it destroyed Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church.

The first tornado then continued southeast toward the village of Hortonville where uprooted and snapped trees damaged hundreds of homes.

With winds of more than 110 mph, the first tornado has been classified as an EF-2 by the National Weather Service.

The second tornado, which was classified as an EF-1, hit the northwest side of Appleton and moved east-southeast. The tornado damaged the roofs of the Northland Mall and nearby businesses.

Wisconsin Emergency Management reported that one person was killed during the storm and three injured.

The fatality and one of the injuries occurred in Marinette County, where workers clearing debris in the road were struck by a vehicle.

The other injuries involved an elderly couple at a campground in Fremont.

Governor Scott Walker is touring the damage Thursday morning.
