Comet runners to host Waupaca Invitational

The cross country season is nearly over and the Waupaca Comets finally have a home meet.

The Comets will host Iola-Scandinavia, Weyauwega-Fremont, Berlin, Fox Valley Lutheran, Little Chute, Winneconne, Amherst, Menasha St. Mary Central, Green Lake, Oconto Falls, Marinette, Peshtigo and Westfield at the Waupaca Invitational, which starts at 4:30 p.m. today (Thursday, Oct. 3), at Waupaca High School.

It won’t be the only time the Comets compete at home, as Waupaca will also host the Eastern Valley Conference meet Saturday, Oct. 19, and a Division 2 sectional Saturday, Oct. 26.

The Comets will head into today’s meet on a roll, as the boys and girls placed first and second, respectively, Sept. 26 at the Westfield Classic in Westfield. Waupaca also competed Sept. 24 at the Wautoma Invitational.

Westfield Classic

WESTFIELD – Three top-10 finishes helped the Waupaca boys win the meet. Mitchell Rotta placed first in 18:21, followed by Parker Sweeney (third, 18:49); Ryan Weise (eighth, 19:21); Hunter Smith (12th, 19:36); Erik Bolwerk (14th, 19:47); Ryan Esch (25th, 20:17); and Ben Waitrovich (43rd, 21:13).

The Comet girls turned in a pair of top-10 finishes, as Michelle Petkovsek placed seventh in 17:22 and Autumn Schultz was 10th in 17:31. Also placing were Ashley Jeske (18th, 18:10); Alisa Blank (20th, 18:31); Victoria Nowak (26th, 18:58); Raina Eddy (27th, 19:03); and Bailey Wanty (32nd, 19:25).

Wautoma Invitational

WAUTOMA – The Comet girls placed fourth in the Masters Division and tied for fourth in the Novice Division, while the boys took fourth in the Masters Division and second in the Novice Division.

Placing for Waupaca in the girls’ Masters race were Schultz (12th, 16:54); Petkovsek (14th, 17:10); and Jeske (18th, 17:14). Placing in the boys’ Masters race were Rotta (sixth, 17:51); Weise (13th, 18:25); and Bolwerk (20th, 18:54).

Placing for Waupaca in the girls’ Novice race were Blank (seventh, 17:48); Nowak (16th, 18:21); Eddy (23rd, 18:53); and Wanty (24th, 18:58). Placing in the boys’ Novice race were Smith (first, 18:11); Sweeney (fifth, 18:47); Esch (14th, 19:40); and Waitrovich (20th, 20:41).
