Comets seeded seventh

Waupaca’s volleyball team will open the state tournament at home.

The Comets, seeded seventh in Division 2, will host New London at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22, in regional quarterfinal play. The winner will play at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, at No. 2 Fox Valley Lutheran in Appleton.

Waupaca posted a 3-2 record Oct. 12 at the Bay Port Invitational in Howard two days after being swept by Appleton Xavier in an Eastern Valley Conference matchup at home.

The Comets defeated Kewaunee (25-23, 25-23), Manitowoc Roncalli (25-21, 25-15) and Kewaunee again (25-10, 25-18) in Howard, but fell to Hortonville (25-13, 25-13) and Appleton West (25-19, 25-13).

“The girls were coming off of losses against Little Chute and Xavier and although we had a good practice on Friday, they came out flat against a tough Hortonville team,” coach Chelsea Benitz said. “It was not until our third match against Kewaunee that I started seeing glimpses of the team that played very well at our last tournament. They continued to improve during the next two games and are excited for our last two conference games coming up this week at Fox Valley Lutheran on Tuesday and at home against Ripon on Thursday.”

Waupaca will close out the regular season at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, against Ripon.
