Second place up for grabs

A pair of area 7-1 football teams will wrap up the regular season against each other.

Amherst will host Iola-Scandinavia at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18, in a matchup that will essentially determine which team will finish in second place behind Shiocton in the Central Wisconsin 8 Conference.

The Thunderbirds improved to 5-1 in conference play Oct. 11 with a 35-0 Homecoming win over Manawa and Amherst is coming off of a 47-6 win over Wittenberg-Birnamwood. Unbeaten Shiocton handed I-S and Amherst their only losses of the season and the Chiefs will close out the season by hosting W-B.

Kristian Welch opened the scoring in the first quarter of the T-Birds’ Homecoming win with a 30-yard run. The score remained 7-0 heading into the third quarter, but the T-Birds found the end zone twice in each of the final two quarters.

Quarterback Nick Wavruk scored from a yard out and threw a 41-yard TD pass to John Prahl in the third quarter. He added a 56-yard pass to Prahl and a 10-yarder to Issac Lashua in the fourth quarter to cap the scoring.

While the T-Bird offense scored five touchdowns, the defense held the Wolves to two first downs in the game, as well as 44 rushing yards and nine yards through the air.

Welch ran for 110 of the T-Birds’ 214 rushing yards, while Wavruk completed six of 12 passes for 164 yards, with Prahl catching three for 133 yards.

The T-Birds and Falcons have already qualified for the state playoffs, which get under way Friday and Saturday, Oct. 25-26, with Level 1 games.
