Thunderbirds stop Wolves

Manawa traveled to Iola-Scandinavia last Friday to face the Thunderbirds and came away at the short end of a 35-0 score.

Iola celebrated their Homecoming by using big plays to gain the win in a game that looked to be much more closely contested than the score would indicate.

The Wolves and Thunderbirds battled for field position for much of the first half with each team taking their turn battling a stiff wind that at times exceeded 25 miles per hour.

Both teams moved the ball but were unable to score with the exception of a first quarter 30-yard scamper around the left side of the Manawa line by Iola’s Kristian Welch. The half ended with Iola holding a 7-0 lead.

Iola opened the scoring of second half with a 1-yard touchdown plunge. This play was facilitated by an Iola drive that featured a 35-yard pass completion.

Iola added to the third quarter scoring when quarterback Nick Wavruk hit John Prahl on a 42-yard touchdown strike.
