Civic groups benefit from triathlon

The 2013 Waupaca Area Triathlon returned $11,505 to more than a dozen local civic organizations that helped make the Aug. 16-17 event the best ever, organizers said.

The 13th annual event attracted more than 1,014 registrations for the long or short course. The Kids’ Triathlon, held Aug. 16, involved 290 children ages 4-10, up 15 from the previous year.

“The success of an event this size requires the assistance of scores of volunteers putting in hundreds of hours of their time,” said Lynn Tolle of the Waupaca Area Chamber of Commerce, which oversees the triathlon. “Since its inception, the triathlon has compensated groups whose members have worked the event, from manning registration tables, setting up the course, ensuring the safety of the competitors, providing refreshments to cleaning up afterward and much more. In turn, proceeds from the triathlon help these groups cover the costs of their ongoing activities.”

Organizations that received funs include Waupaca County Amateur Radio Emergency Services (ARES); Boy Scout Troop 634; Waupaca Lions and Lionesses clubs; Riverside Medical Center Auxiliary; Jaycees of Waupaca; Waupaca High School dance team; Chain Skiers; VFW Post 1037 Auxiliary; Waupaca International Cultural Exchange Committee; Waupaca Historical Society; Scandinavia Public Library; Trinity Lutheran Church; Faith Community Church; Shepherd of the Lakes Lutheran Church; Tiny Treasures Preschool; and Waupaca County Humane Society.

The Waupaca Area Triathlon Board of Directors wishes to thank these groups and countless individual volunteers for contributing to an increasingly popular family-friendly event that promotes fitness and provides an economic boost to area businesses, including hotels, campgrounds and restaurants.

The board looks forward to involving the community in the 14th Waupaca Area Triathlon on Aug. 16, 2014. Registration opens Dec. 1. Go to www.waupacaareatriathlon.com for more information.
