Thunder rolls over Waupaca

That football rematch with Appleton Xavier will have to wait.

Waupaca saw its season come to an end Nov. 1 with a 34-7 loss to Seymour in a Division 3 Level 2 matchup. The Comets ended their season at 10-1, while the Thunder improved to 9-2 and will face Xavier in Level 3. Xavier advanced with a 30-28 win over West De Pere.

Seymour finished third behind Hortonville and West De Pere in the Bay Conference this season, while Waupaca won another Eastern Valley Conference championship. When it comes to the playoffs, however, records and standings can be thrown out the window.

Seymour’s rushing game accounted for 390 of the team’s 445 yards and all five touchdowns. Seth Jefson ran for a game-high 228 yards, while Dylan Beyer added three touchdowns in the second half.

Dakota Oskey put the Thunder on the board with a 6-yard run in the first quarter, while Jefson found the end zone from 11 yards out to give Seymour a 14-0 halftime lead. Beyer scored on runs of 8 and 5 yards in the third quarter and 6 yards in the fourth quarter.

Waupaca’s touchdown came with 1:57 remaining in the game on Nate Nelson’s 1-yard run on fourth down that capped a 13-play, 76-yard drive. Before that drive, Seymour had held the Comets to 96 yards of offense.

Quarterback Nate Jenson was Waupaca’s leading rusher with 68 yards. He also completed nine of 23 passes, with five of them going to Nelson for 24 yards.

Although the season is over for Waupaca, three other EVC teams are still alive in the playoffs. Xavier will host Seymour in Division 3, while Winneconne and Freedom have Division 4 games. Winneconne will play at Nekoosa, while Manitowoc Roncalli will host Freedom. Kickoff for all three games is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8.
