Indians off to 4-0 start

Only three players scored, but it was just enough for the Weyauwega-Fremont girls’ basketball team to pick up a 34-32 nonconference win over Omro and improve to 4-0 on the season.

The Indians also picked up wins over Wausau East and Gillett.

W-F 34, Omro 32

OMRO – Karissa Akey and Morgan Wilson combined for 29 of the team’s 34 points against the Foxes Dec. 9.

W-F led 7-4 after one quarter, 15-11 at halftime and 24-17 after three quarters, but the Foxes had a 15-10 advantage in the fourth quarter and had a chance to tie the game in the final seconds.

Akey led all scorers with 16 points, while Wilson added 13. Alyssa Goode scored the Indians’ other five points.

W-F 41, Wausau East 38

WEYAUWEGA – W-F trailed 30-28 heading into the fourth quarter, but outscored the Lumberjacks 13-8 over the final eight minutes.

Wilson scored 16 of her 17 game-high points in the second half, while Akey added 14 points and 18 rebounds.

“We started out well, but gave up some uncontested shots late in the first half and third quarter,” coach Joe Titus said. “Morgan pretty much put the team on her back and willed us to a win. Our defense was good, but I think we had some tired legs after three games in five days. We are finding ways to win close games, but still need to tighten some things up.”

W-F 31, Gillett 12

GILLETT – The Indians held the Tigers to no more than seven points in a quarter and didn’t allow a point in the fourth period.

The Indians led 10-3 after one quarter, 19-5 at halftime and 19-12 after three quarters.

“We started out pretty strong and our defense did a good job,” Titus said. “We struggled against their zone in the third quarter, but we were able to force them out of it and take advantage of some matchups in the fourth quarter. We outrebounded them 30-15 and gave up only one offensive rebound.”

Akey had eight points and 10 rebounds, while freshman Hailey Krause added eight points. Wilson had career highs in steals (five) and assists (three) and added six points.

“Limiting our turnovers to nine for the game was clutch for us,” Titus said. “We know that if we are going to have any success this year, we will need to be strong on the boards and take care of the basketball.”

The Indians will open Central Wisconsin 8 Conference play at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 13, at Manawa. W-F will also head to Amherst for a 6 p.m. CWC-8 matchup with the Falcons Tuesday, Dec. 17.
