Pond hockey tournament returns in January

The second annual Wintervergnügen Pond Hockey Classic will return in January to Waupaca’s Shadow Lake.

The tournament will be held Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 25-26, and takes hockey back to its origins, as teams compete against the elements of late January Wisconsin weather as well as their opponent.

All teams are guaranteed three games and can register for the open, 40-and-over and women’s divisions.

Local volunteers will create four 150-foot-by-75-foot rinks just off the shore of South Park.

“In our first year, six teams participated in the tournament, with one travelling up from Chicago to compete,” said Jeff Anderson, tourism director with the Waupaca Area Chamber of Commerce. “We look forward to building the tournament in 2014 and expect to have 10 to 12 teams participating.”

A heated food and beverage tent will be available on the ice with food from Culver’s of Waupaca and beverages served by the Waupaca Area Jaycees.

The team registration deadline is Friday, Jan. 10, with an early bird deadline of Friday, Dec. 13. Teams registering by the early bird date receive $50 off their registration fee.
