Bulldogs conquer Spartans

The Bulldog varsity boys basketball team did a good job of keeping their composure during the last 1:30 of a wild fourth quarter against the Luxemburg-Casco Spartans to earn a 50-47 victory.

New London held a 25-19 at halftime, but the Bulldogs’ shooting went cold in the third quarter. Fortunately, the Bulldogs found their shooting touch in the final quarter.

With 1:30 left in the game, Sam Porath snatched an offensive rebound and then scored to give New London a 43-41 lead. The Spartans promptly tied the game, but Ryan Wolf nailed a huge 3-point shot with 1:00 left to play to put New London ahead 46-43.

With 45 seconds left, Jacob Pinch sank two free throws to put New London up 48-43. With 38 seconds left, the pesky Spartans scored to trim the Bulldogs’ lead to three points.

With 34 seconds left, Nick Thomas deflected an inbounds pass and Wolf snared the ball for a steal. He was then fouled, and made both free throws to stretch New London’s lead to 50-45. Despite short time and a five-point deficit, the Spartans refused to give up.

Luxemburg-Casco came back and scored to make the score 50-47. With 19 seconds left, New London missed the front end of a bonus free throw.

The Spartans inbounded the ball with three seconds remaining and missed a half-court shot at the buzzer, allowing New London to walk away with a 50-47 win.

Wolf led the team with 21 points, making 5 of 10 shots, 3 of 5 from 3-point range, and 8 of 8 from the charity stripe. Pinch scored nine points, Porath added eight, Ryan Krueger and Nick Thomas both scored three, and Hunter Zaddack and Ty Barrington both scored two.
