Erickson has hat trick in win over Tomahawk

Waupaca’s boys’ hockey team picked up a pair of recent Great Northern Conference road wins over Rhinelander and Tomahawk.

The Comets handed Rhinelander a 6-1 defeat Dec. 14 two days after shutting out Tomahawk 9-0 on the Hatchets’ home rink.

Waupaca 6, Rhinelander 1

RHINELANDER – Waupaca took a 1-0 lead into the second period, as Frankie Ellingson and Brandon Bolen teamed up to assist on Elliot Crisman’s goal 1:30 into the game.

Waupaca wasted little time adding to the lead in the second period, as Aaron Dahle and Austin Erickson scored in the first 1:06. Jared Erickson and Zach Smith assisted on Dahle’s goal, while Ben Stone got the assist on Erickson’s score.

The Hodags cut the lead to 3-1 midway through the period on Brett Estabrook’s unassisted goal, but that turned out to be the Hodags’ only score on the night.

Jared Erickson found the net off of a Dahle assist with 4:18 left in the period to make it 4-1 and Jared Erickson and Crisman wrapped up the scoring in the third period. Grant Stearns assisted on Erickson’s second goal and Austin Erickson and Bolen picked up an assist on Crisman’s second goal.

Comet goalie Walker Smith finished with 22 saves.

Waupaca 9, Tomahawk 0

TOMAHAWK – Jared Erickson had a hat trick less than two minutes into the game with three of his five goals on the night.

He scored on an unassisted play 10 seconds into the game, came up with another unassisted goal eight seconds later and picked up his hat trick with 15:02 left in the first period off of an assist from Stone.

Erickson wasn’t finished in the period, as his goal with 1:19 to play off of a Crisman assist gave the Comets a 4-0 lead heading into the second period.

Ellingson scored at the 8:45 mark of the second period off of an assist from Erickson and Crisman and Erickson came up with his fifth goal on another unassisted play with 1:19 to go in the period.

Dahle, Max Menzies and Garrett Johnson scored for Waupaca in the third period. Zach Smith and Erickson assisted on Dahle’s goal; Austin Erickson assisted on Menzies’ shot; and Jared Erickson and Hunter Smith assisted on Johnson’s goal.

Smith stopped all 17 of Tomahawk’s shots on goal.

The Comets hosted Antigo Dec. 17 at the Waupaca Expo Center and will travel to the Tri-County Ice Arena in Neenah for a 7 p.m. nonconference matchup with Neenah/Menasha/Hortonville. Waupaca is then off until the Stevens Point Invitational, set for Friday and Saturday, Jan. 3-4, at the K.B. Willett Ice Arena in Stevens Point.
