T-Birds outscore Brillion, Marathon

The Iola-Scandinavia Thunderbird swim team hosted its first home meet of the season Dec. 14 that drew about 135 swimmers.

The T-Birds outscored teams form Brillion and Marathon.

“This was our biggest home meet ever,” coach Dick Wright said. “Marathon and Brillion brought nice-sized teams and we had about 55 of our own swimmers attend.”

Luke Sperl, Payton Carlson and Aleah Breed led the 8-and-under swimmers. Sperl recorded a first and three seconds; Carlson had three firsts and a second; and Breed added three third-place finishes.

Matthew Glodowski, Ryan Breed, Sara Breed, Amber Sperl and Cassidy Kostuch were the top 9- and 10-year-olds. Glodowski racked up three firsts; Ryan Breed had three seconds; Sara Breed had two firsts and a third; and Kostuch and Sperl added two seconds and two thirds.

Ana Holder, Karina Lisogor and Tanner Koles led the 11-12 swimmers. Holder had three firsts and a third, while Lisogor and Koles had their best meet ever with three top-five finishes.

Ethan Olson, Dylan Kostuch, Megan Struble and Madi Hass led the 13-14 group. Olson had two firsts and two seconds; Kostuch had two seconds and two third; and Struble and Hass added three top-four finishes.

The 15-18 group dominated their division with performances from Mitch Glodowski, Zach Shulfer, Ryan Parks, Jake Struble and Morgan Glodowski. Mitch Glodowski won the 50 and 100 freestyle, as well as the butterfly , and finished second in the 100 backstroke; Shulfer won the 100 backstroke and 200 individual medley and took second in the 100 freestyle and butterfly; Parks won the 100 IM and 100 breaststroke and also had two thirds; Struble won the 200 freestyle and had three seconds; and Morgan Glodowski topped the girls’ field in all of her races.

“This was a really nice home meet for us,” Wright said. “We had a really nice, energetic crowd and a lot of close races in all divisions. We had a big turnout and depth is a big factor for our team.”

Ana Holder, Karina Lisogor, Matthew Glodowski and Tanner Koles shared the team’s Swimmer of the Week honors.

The team’s Tayler Carlson also participated in a USA invitational meet in Wausau and swam in eight events. She finished fifth in the girls’ 9-10 division and won the 50 breaststroke, took third in the 200 IM, was fourth in the 100 IM and had three other top-seven finishes. She also hit state-qualifying times in four events.

The T-Birds will host their annual open winter meet at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 21, at the Iola-Scandinavia Community Fitness & Aquatic Center in Iola. The team will also travel to the Rhinelander Invitational Saturday, Jan. 11.
