Spartans pull away in second half

The Weyauwega-Fremont boys’ basketball team was able to keep pace for one half with a state-ranked team.

The Indians trailed Laconia 21-20 at halftime Jan. 2, but the Spartans turned up the defensive pressure and outscored W-F 34-10 in the second half and returned to Rosendale with a 55-30 nonconference win.

Laconia took a 15-6 lead into the second quarter, but the Indians outscored the Spartans 14-6 over the next eight minutes and had a one-point lead at one point late in the half.

Laconia put the game away with a 20-2 advantage in the third quarter and held the Indians to eight points in the fourth quarter.

Lincoln VanCuick led the Indians with 10 points. Nick Vollmer led Laconia with 14 points.

The Indians’ nonconference home game with Wisconsin Valley Lutheran originally scheduled for Jan. 6 has been rescheduled for 6:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 3. W-F’s next game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10, a Central Wisconsin 8 Conference home matchup with Bonduel.
