T-birds rally in fourth quarter

Forty-two turnovers – including 25 steals – helped the Iola-Scandinavia girls’ basketball team pick up a 49-46 Central Wisconsin 8 Conference win over Weyauwega-Fremont Jan. 17.

The Thunderbirds were outscored in each of the first three quarters, but rallied to outscore the Indians 22-14 in the fourth quarter.

W-F led 11-9 after one quarter, 21-18 at halftime and 32-27 after three quarters.

“Our defense had a rough game,” W-F coach Joe Titus said. “Iola did a great job on the offensive glass and forced us into some bad decisions. Forty-plus turnovers is difficult to overcome and that contributed to being outshot 51-27. It’s a game we need to learn from, go forward and get ready for Shiocton.”

Brooke Phillips had a big night for the T-Birds with a team-high 19 points, 10 steals and five rebounds. Leighten Fischer added eight points and three steals and Kylie Johnson finished with six points.

W-F’s Kelsey Akey led all scorers with 20 points, while Alyssa Goode chipped in with eight.

I-S will head to Bonduel today (Thursday, Jan. 23), while W-F will host Shiocton Friday, Jan. 24. Tipoff for both games is set for 7:30 p.m.
