Comets score 16 goals in two games

Finding the net has not been a problem lately for the Waupaca boys’ hockey team.

The Comets handed the Oshkosh Ice Hawks a 7-1 defeat Jan. 23 two days after defeating Tomahawk 9-5 in a matchup of Great Northern Conference teams.

Waupaca 7, Oshkosh 1

Frankie Ellingson and Elliot Crisman had two goals each in the win, while Drew Simonson, Max Menzies and Jared Erickson added solo goals. Austin Erickson and Ben Stone led the team in assists with three each, while Ellingson, Erickson and Zach Smith had one each.

Goalie Walker Smith stopped 25 of Oshkosh’s 26 shots, while Waupaca finished with 34 shots on goal.

Waupaca 9, Tomahawk 5

The Hatchets again had no answer for Jared Erickson, who scored five goals against Tomahawk for the second time this season.

Simonson had two goals and two assists; Brandon Bolen and Ellingson had one goal; Menzies had four assists; Crisman and Austin Erickson had two assists; and Jared Erickson, Aaron Dahle and Stone had one assist.

Waupaca outshot the Hatchets 53-30 and Smith finished with 25 saves.

The Comets’ game at Antigo originally scheduled for Jan. 28 has been rescheduled for today (Thursday, Jan. 20). The junior varsity game is set for 4:45 p.m., with the varsity contest to follow at 7 p.m.
