Students set sail

Waupaca High School students are putting the finishing touches on the upcoming all-school production of “Treasure Island.” Performances will run Friday to Sunday, Feb. 14-16 in the school’s Performing Arts Center, with performances scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Feb. 14 and Feb. 15 and 2:30 p.m. Feb. 16.

The beloved story, written by Robert Louis Stevenson, was first published in 1883 and has become one of the most popular children’s adventure novels of all time. This classic story centers on Jim Hawkins, a boy who is given a valuable map. He learns that it shows where a huge treasure of the infamous pirate Captain Flint was buried on a distant island. A squire assembles a crew and they sail toward the island on the Hispaniola, with Hawkins on board.

“This particular stage adaptation, written by popular playwright Ken Ludwig, includes all the famous characters, such as Long John Silver, Billy Bones, Captain Flint and Jim Hawkins,” WHS drama director Monica Reeves said. “The quest to find the treasure starts onboard a ship encountering a violent storm, then to the famous Bristol Inn and eventually to the eerie Skeleton Island.

“Children and adults alike will be captivated by this tale of treasure on the tropical seas,” she added. “Choreographed sword fighting, creative stage lighting, a large pirate ship complete with a mast and sail and dramatic music all enhance the play’s conflicts. From scene to scene, the adventure builds.”

General admission tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for all students and can be purchased at the Waupaca High School main office or at the door one hour prior to the show.
