Public input sought on warming shelter

Foundations For Living, located at 1421 Churchill St. in Waupaca, is a transitional living agency dedicated to serving people who are homeless and in transition due to a variety of reasons.

In the course of our work, we have had people come to our office in need of emergency shelter, and have discovered that Waupaca County has very few options for providing this emergency shelter. In our quest to assist those who are homeless in Waupaca County, Foundations For Living has applied to the city for a special use permit to use a portion of our Churchill Street building to open a warming shelter.

In order to do due diligence to the process and to understand and address the concerns that citizens may have, the staff at FFL is doing, or has done, the following:

• Creating a steering committee that will consist of Waupaca County business owners, church, community and government representatives.

• Contacting zoning officials from other cities to gain insight into how they, as a city, worked through this process,

• Contacting other warming shelters to gain insight into shelter policies and procedures.

• Reaching out to community members to gain insight into questions and concerns surrounding the homeless issue and opening a warming shelter, both in Waupaca County in general and more specifically at the Churchill Street address.

With that in mind, we would like to invite citizens of Waupaca County to be a part of the warming shelter steering committee or to let us know your questions and concerns about a having a warming shelter in Waupaca by completing the questionnaire at www.foundationsforlivingwaupaca.com. Your input would be appreciated.

If you are interested in serving on the steering committee or have further questions, call me at 715-942-2725. Please direct questions regarding zoning concerns to Brennan Kane at 715-942-9904.
