Slow start dooms Truckers

The Winneconne Wolves pounced on the Truckers in the first quarter Tuesday, Feb. 4, and protected their lead the rest of the way to earn a 55-46 win.

Clintonville trailed by eight after one quarter and found themselves down 23-12 at halftime.

The Trucker offense came to life in the third quarter, outscoring the Wolves 17-15. The final quarter saw both teams score 17 points.

The Truckers made 14 of 33 shots (42 percent) and hit 4 of 15 from beyond the arc (26 percent). Clintonville made 14 of 24 free throw attempts (58 percent).

The Wolves outrebounded the Truckers 24-21 and had 13 assists to Clintonville’s 10. The Wolves also notched five steals and one blocked shot, while Clintonville had three thefts and three blocks. The Truckers turned the ball over nine times, while the Wolves have seven giveaways.

Andy Schmidt and Tyler Petermann both scored 16 points for the Truckers. Turner Doornink added six, Emmett Battenberg netted four, and Parker Mindel and Ross Westphal both scored two.

The Truckers stayed in the game by hitting 10 of 16 shots from 3-point range (62 percent) while also making 15 of 27 shots (55 percent). The team made just 2 of 5 attempts from the free throw line in the one-point loss (40 percent).

Clintonville committed 15 turnovers, while the Mustangs had only four giveaways. Little Chute had eight steals compared to Clintonville’s four.

Schmidt led Clintonville with 20 points, while Petermann added six. Battenberg netted five, Doornink scored four, Aaron Teske tallied three, and Westphal and Skyler Lehman both scored two.
