Waupaca boys? hockey team defeats Medford

Waupaca’s boys’ hockey team wrapped up the regular season Feb. 13 with a 7-1 Great Northern Conference win in Medford.

The Comets also fell to Stevens Point Pacelli 4-2 Feb. 11.

Waupaca 7, Medford 1

MEDFORD – Austin Erickson had a hat trick for the Comets and added two assists, while Aaron Dahle and Frankie Ellingson scored twice.

Jared Erickson and Ben Stone had two assists for Waupaca, while Grant Stearns and Walker Smith had one each.

Waupaca scored twice in the first period, three times in the second and twice in the third. Smith stopped 12 of Medford’s 13 shots, while Raider goalie Carter Jamieson stopped 44 of Waupaca’s 41 shots on goal.

Pacelli 4, Waupaca 2

WAUPACA – Chris Karch and Charlie Beyer scored twice to lead the Cardinals to their 14th win in a row.

Karch and Beyer gave Pacelli a 2-0 lead with second-period goals and Karch put the Cardinals up 3-0 1:20 into the final period. The Comets came back with goals from Austin Erickson and Stone, but Beyer came up with an empty-net goal with 1:10 remaining to help seal the win.

Smith and Pacelli goalie Joe Fuller each had 34 saves in the game.

Waupaca will open state tournament play at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 21, against Appleton United at the Appleton Family Ice Center. The Comets are seeded fifth, while United received a No. 4 seed. The winner will likely face top-ranked Green Bay Notre Dame Tuesday, Feb. 25, in a sectional semifinal in Green Bay.
