Panthers stun Bulldogs

After a typically dominant first quarter, the Bulldog varsity basketball team seemed to be on course for another blowout win. The Oconto Falls Panthers had other ideas.

Despite trailing 18-8 after one quarter, the Panthers were able to take a 25-22 lead into halftime. In the third quarter, they outscored New London 14-10 to add to their lead.

The Bulldogs mounted a furious comeback in the fourth quarter, scoring 22 points; however, it wasn’t enough, as the Panthers scored 16 in the final frame to escape with the one-point victory, 55-54.

Payton Mix led New London with 14 points and five rebounds, while Lexi Roland scored 11 points. Mickey Roland tallied seven points, Maddie Schroeder added five, Cambria Fitzgerald, Gretl Steingraber and Leah Porath all scored four, Amber Pethke netted three, and Cassidy Pethke scored two.

McKenna Larson scored 25 and Elizabeth Manns added 17 to lead the Panthers.

New London made 20 of 50 shots (40 percent), including 5 of 11 from 3-point range (45 percent). The team made 9 of 13 free throws (69 percent).

The Bulldogs snared 21 rebounds but had just four assists. The team picked up 13 steals but turned the ball over 16 times and committed 21 fouls.

New London 57, Marinette 35

New London led 18-9 after one quarter and 29-11 at halftime. They outscored the Marines 15-12 in the third quarter and 13-12 in the fourth quarter.

Lexi Roland scored 14 to lead New London, while Mix added 13 and Mickey Roland netted 11. Caitlin Schmidt and Steingraber both scored four, Amber Pethke tallied three, and Cassidy Pethke, Schroeder, Fitzgerald and Porath all scored two.

New London made 23 of 57 shots (40 percent), hitting 4 of 16 3-point shots (25 percent). The team made 7 of 9 free throws (77 percent).

New London had 31 rebounds, 18 assists, 11 steals, 11 turnovers, and 15 fouls.
