Bulldogs capture Regional Title

Two big wins powered the Bulldogs to another Regional Title last week.

New London topped Antigo 46-28 in a regional semi-final at New London on Friday, March 7, and followed it up with a 54-38 win over the Hortonville Polar Bears in the Regional Final in New London on Saturday, March 8.

New London 46, Antigo 28

New London led 9-5 after one quarter and 20-10 at halftime. New London outscored Antigo 9-8 in the third quarter and 17-10 in the final frame to seal the win.

Lexi Roland had the hot hand for the Bulldogs, scoring 18 points. Mickey Roland and Payton Mix both netted seven points, while Cambria Fitzgerald scored five and Gretl Steingraber tallied three. Leah Porath and Amber Pethke both scored two, while Maddie Schroeder and Cassidy Pethke both contributed one point.

New London made 16 of 38 shots (42 percent), including 5 of 13 from 3-point range (38 percent). The team made 9 of 15 free throws (60 percent). The Bulldogs grabbed 22 rebounds, dished out 12 assists, nabbed eight steals, blocked three shots and turned the ball over 13 times while committing 16 fouls.

New London 54, Hortonville 38

Fans from New London and Hortonville packed the gym for another showdown between the neighboring districts, this time with a Regional Title on the line.

New London jumped out to an 11-4 lead after one quarter, and led 22-11 at halftime. The Bulldogs outscored the Polar Bears 14-10 in the third quarter and 18-17 in the fourth quarter to capture the victory.

Amber Pethke scored 12 to lead New London, while Mickey Roland scored 11 and grabbed seven rebounds. Mix added nine, Lexi Roland scored eight, Porath and Steingraber both tallied five, and Schroeder and Fitzgerald both dropped in two.

New London made 13 of 43 shots (30 percent) including 2 of 11 from 3-point range (18 percent). The Bulldogs earned a huge advantage at the free throw line, sinking 26 of 37 attempts (70 percent).

New London pulled down 27 rebounds, notched nine assists, tallied six steals, blocked four shots and committed 16 turnovers in the game. They were also whistled for 24 personal fouls.

The Bulldogs (19-4, #1 seed) play at Stevens Point at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 13, against Merrill (16-7, #1 seed). If they win, they will play for a Sectional Title at 1 p.m. in Marshfield on Saturday, March 15. That game will feature New London or Merrill against La Crosse Central (19-5, #2 seed) or Rice Lake (11-13, # 2 seed).
