I-S Thunderbirds off to fast start

Now that the Iola-Scandinavia track team has a pair of meets in the books, coach Brad Brookins has a pretty good idea of what he has to work with.

The Thunderbirds opened the season March 18 at an indoor meet in Seymour and followed that up March 22 with another indoor meet, the Early Bird Invitational at Wausau West.

“After the first two indoor meets this season, we are extremely excited to see how far some of the kids can go,” Brookins said. “We have more kids out this year and have already had some great performances. We also have more coaches this year, which allows us to truly specialize during our event-specific time. We are seeing the results already.”

This year’s roster includes seniors Seth Bauer, Issac Lashua, Matt Matheny, Devin Paulson, Bryce Pennebecker, Morgan Frye, Emily Sether and Tyisha Weed; juniors Tyler Ambacher, Evan Fuhs, Tanner Krusa, Nick Madson, Dylan Robbins, Justin Schumacher, Claire Bestul, Sam Buss, Michelle Ellie, Ariana Garton, Megan Mazemke and Shelby Trzebiatowski; sophomores Karl Boddy, Cole Frye, Anthony Gomez, Sam Jarosh, Michael Schaefer, Kristian Welch, Adam Cherek, Hana Buttles, Izzy Carper, Kali Finch, Hunter Frye, Micaela Jobke and Amy Vanden Bush; and freshmen Gio Fredheim, Roman Glodowski, Leighten Fischer and Mckenzie Widolff.

Four of the athletes competed at state last year. Matheny, Paulson and Robbins were members of the boys’ 800 relay team; and Trzebiatowski placed 13th in the girls’ 800-meter run.

“We traveled to Seymour for the first meet of the year and the kids did awesome,” Brookins said. “I was especially proud of our relays, as we took first place in every relay we competed in.”

The boys finished third behind Seymour and Bonduel, while the girls finished second behind Seymour.

Firsts went to the boys’ 800-meter relay team of Matheny, Paulson, Krusa and Welch (1:50.66); the boys’ 1,600 relay team of Paulson, Matheny, Gomez and Fuhs (4:11.24); the girls’ 800 relay team of Weed, Hunter Frye, Fischer and Morgan Frye (2:10.33); the girls’ 1,600 relay team of Morgan Frye, Fischer, Sether and Trzebiatowski (4:54.49); and the girls’ 3,200 relay team of Fischer, Brynn Rasmussen, Sether and Trzebiatowski (11:37.75).

Individual firsts went to Kristian Welch in the boys’ 55-meter dash (7:12), Krusa in the boys’ 200-meter hurdles (29.99); Justin Schumacher in the boys’ triple jump (36 feet, 3 3/4 inches); Trzebiatowski in the girls’ 800-meter run (2:54.71); Sether in the girls’ 1,600-meter run (6:24.31); and Fischer in the girls’ long jump (15 feet, 6 3/4 inches).

The boys and girls also placed fifth and fourth, respectively, at Wausau West.

Robbins won the boys’ 400-meter dash (57.36), while Fischer won the girls’ long jump (16 feet).

The girls competed at the Stevens Point Invitational March 24, while the boys will head to Stevens Point at 4 p.m. today (Thursday, March 27). Both squads are then scheduled to compete outdoors for the first time Thursday, April 3, at Plainfield Tri-County, with events scheduled to get under way at 3:45 p.m.
