T-Birds win four in a row

Iola-Scandinavia’s softball team won all four games it played this past week.

The Thunderbirds beat Amherst 10-3 April 21 and picked up a 6-2 win over Bonduel April 22. The T-Birds also won both games in a nonconference round-robin tournament April 26 in Iola: a 5-0 decision over Auburndale and an 11-2 victory over Tigerton.

The team has a 3-1 record in Central Wisconsin 8 Conference play and is 7-5 overall.

Meanwhile, the junior varsity team won both games it played this past week by sweeping a doubleheader over Wittenberg-Birnamwood, 16-0 and 10-5, April 25 to improve to 2-4 on the season.

I-S 10, Amherst 3
The T-Birds took control of the game early by scoring five runs in the first three innings. Nine different batters had at least one hit as the T-Birds outhit the Falcons 11-4. Brooke Phillips had three hits, including two doubles.

Brianne Huettner went the distance to earn the win on the mound. She allowed four hits and one walk while striking out 12 batters. Huettner also helped herself out offensively with four hits, including a double and home run, while driving in six runs.

I-S 6, Bonduel 2
I-S came up with three runs in the fifth and sixth innings to break open a close game to defeat the Bears.

The T-Birds never trailed in the game and held a slim 3-2 lead after four innings.

Huettner allowed three hits and four walks while striking out three batters to get the win.

Phillips, Huettner, Kylie Johnson and Jane Oligney accounted for all nine T-Bird hits. Huettner and Oligney each had three, including a double by Huettner. Phillips drove in three runs on two hits, including a double and a sixth-inning home run, and Johnson added a double.

I-S 5, Auburndale 0
Huettner pitched a complete game shutout to help lead the T-Birds to a win over the Apaches. She allowed two hits and four walks while striking out 10.

The T-Birds scored their five runs in the first two innings. After scoring one run in the first inning on a double by Johnson and a sacrifice infield popup by Phillips, the T-Birds added four more runs in the second inning. Lindsey Bloom drove in two runs on a single before Johnson smashed a two-run home run in.

I-S 11, Tigerton 2
The T-Birds scored three runs in each of the first two innings.

Phillips allowed four hits and four walks while striking out 12 to get the complete-game win.

Jessica Faldet led the T-Birds with four hits, including two doubles. Phillips, Bloom, Mariah Oppor and Karina Welch added had two hits, while Phillips, Oligney and Bloom each had a double. Phillips also drove in three runs.

The T-Birds are scheduled to return to CWC-8 action at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, May 1, at Wittenberg-Birnamwood before hosting the Chargers the following day at 4:30 p.m.

I-S will also host Manawa at 4:30 p.m. Monday, May 5, before hosting a doubleheader against Weyauwega-Fremont on Thursday, May 8, with the first game slated at 4:30 p.m.
