Thunderbirds sweep Chargers

Iola-Scandinavia’s softball team battled weather and wet field conditions all week and managed to play two of four games originally scheduled.

The Thunderbirds beat Wittenberg-Birnamwood on consecutive days 14-1 May 1 and 12-0 on May 2 to improve to 5-1 in Central Wisconsin 8 Conference play and 9-5 overall.

IOLA – Iola-Scandinavia broke open a 3-0 game after three innings with five runs in the fourth and four runs in the fifth.

Brooke Phillips ended the game in the fifth inning due to the 10-run rule with a three-run home run. Phillips also had a double.

Brianne Huettner allowed three hits and two walks and struck out five batters to get the shutout on the mound.
Jane Oligney had three hits, including two doubles, while Kylie Johnson and Huettner added two hits each.

WITTENBERG – The T-Birds came up with eight runs in the first inning of another five-inning game.

Huettner went the distance to earn the win, allowing three hits and two walks and striking out six batters.

Johnson, Oligney and Mariah Oppor each had two of the T-Birds’ 12 hits. Johnson and Huettner each had a double.
Meanwhile, the junior varsity team beat Wittenberg-Birnamwood 13-8 May 2 to even its record at 4-4.  

Weather permitting, the T-Birds will host a doubleheader against Weyauwega-Fremont today (Thursday, May 8), with the first game starting at 4:30 p.m.

Other upcoming games include a CWC-8 matchup at Stevens Point Pacelli at Zenoff Park at 4 p.m. Friday, May 9; a home game against Shiocton at 4:30 p.m. Monday, May 12; and conference games in Amherst at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 13, and at Bonduel Thursday, May 15.
