T-Birds win CWC-8 baseball title

The hunt for a Central Wisconsin 8 Conference baseball championship didn’t come down to the final game of the season after all.

Iola-Scandinavia wrapped up the title May 22 with a 4-3 win over Amherst. The T-Birds finished CWC-8 season with a 12-2 mark in conference games after dropping a 6-5 decision May 23 to Shiocton.

Nick Wavruk and Hunter Gruenwald each had a double in the game for the T-Birds. Gruenwald also took the loss on the mound.

The Chiefs scored twice in the first inning, once in the second and three times in the third to take a 6-2 lead into the fourth.

I-S came up with single runs in the second, third and sixth before tacking on two more in the top of the seventh to cut Shiocton’s lead to a run.

Besides knocking off Amherst, the T-Birds also handed Stevens Pacelli an 11-2 defeat May 21.

The T-Birds will tune up for the upcoming state tournament with a pair of last-minute additions to the schedule. I-S hosted Wisconsin Rapids Assumption May 25 and will play at Waupaca at 4:30 p.m. Friday, May 30.

I-S has a bye in the first round of the playoffs and will host Plainfield Tri-County or Amherst Wednesday, June 4, in a WIAA Division 3 regional semifinal. If the T-Birds win, they will play for a regional championship Friday, June 6, in Iola.
