Waupaca splits a pair

Waupaca has added a pair of late-season nonconference baseball games against area teams.

The Comets will host New London’s junior varsity and varsity teams at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, May 29.

Meanwhile, Iola-Scandinavia’s varsity team will head to Waupaca for a 4:30 p.m. matchup with the Comets Friday, May 30.

Waupaca faced Ripon May 27 for a share of the Eastern Valley Conference championship. The Comets also hosted the Tigers May 23 and picked up a 3-2 win. Freedom wrapped up at least a share of the title May 23 by sweeping Berlin. If Waupaca defeated Ripon May 27, the Comets and Irish will share the championship.

Waupaca also dropped an 8-4 nonconference decision May 22 to Hortonville.

Waupaca 3, Ripon 2
It was a shaky start for pitcher Johnny Popham, but he eventually settled down on the mound and retired the final 15 batters he faced.

He struck out seven batters and scattered three hits to get the win.

Ripon came up with runs in the first and second innings before Bryce Neidert tied the game with a two-run single in the bottom of the second.

The Comets came up with the game-winning run in the fourth, as Nate Nelson singled, made it to third base on a bunt and scored on Payton Bryden’s wild pitch.

Neidert and Nelson had two hits for Waupaca.

Hortonville 8, Waupaca 4

Connor Hafeman’s three-run home run in the sixth inning helped erase a 4-2 deficit.

Waupaca scored three times in the bottom of the third to take a 4-2 lead, but Hortonville tied the game with a pair of runs in the fifth before plating four more runners in the sixth.

Hortonville committed three errors in the game, but also outhit the Comets 11-4.
