T-Birds blanked in semifinal

The season is over for the Iola-Scandinavia softball team, as Shiocton handed the Thunderbirds an 8-0 defeat May 27 in a Division 3 regional semifinal.

The T-Birds could only manage four hits against Shiocton. Kylie Johnson had a two-out triple to right-center field in the third inning.  Brianne Huettner and Jane Oligney reached base on consecutive hits to lead off the seventh, but again were left stranded to end the game.  Karina Welch had the team’s other hit.

Brooke Phillips started the game on the mound and worked the first five innings in taking the loss. She allowed eight hits and four walks while striking out four batters. Kendall Johnson finished the game in the circle and allowed one hit.

The Thunderbirds finished the season with an 18-8 overall record. The loss also marked the end for seniors Mariah Oppor and Welch.

“We will miss Mariah and Karina’s leadership on and off the field,” coach Tom Anderson said. “Their hard work in the offseason and at practice made them very good softball players for us. They also excelled in the classroom, graduating near the top of their class and earning academic all-state honors from the high school softball coaches association. We wish them the very best in the future.”
