Indians come up short in sectional final

It’s hard to score on the Oconto Blue Devils.

The Weyauwega-Fremont baseball team learned that lesson the hard way June 10, as the Blue Devils, the defending Division 3 state champion, eliminated the Indians from the WIAA state baseball playoffs with a 4-0 loss in a sectional final.

W-F had advanced to the final by defeating Athens 4-3 earlier in the day.

Oconto 4, W-F 0
Oconto, which shut out another Central Wisconsin 8 Conference team, Shiocton, 2-0 in the semifinals, scored three times in the first inning and added one more in the fourth.

Teague Camps put the Blue Devils on the board with a two-run single in the first and later scored on a passed ball. He also scored the game’s final run in the fourth.

Blake Hudziak took the loss for W-F.

W-F 4, Athens 3
The Indians came up with three runs in the bottom of the third inning on Nick Walters’ RBI single and Bryce Akey’s two-run double.

Athens responded with a pair of runs in the fourth after a hit batter, walk and error loaded the bases with one out.

The Indians added a run in the fifth on Walters’ second RBI single.

Athens cut the lead in half with a run in the sixth, but couldn’t get any closer. A hit batter and a single put runners at first and second with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but Zach Costello started a 6-4-3 double play that ended the game.

Walters had two of the Indians’ hits, drove in a pair of runs and scored one himself. Winning pitcher Logan Bosquez held the Bluejays in check for six innings and also scored twice. Akey came on in the seventh to get the save.
