Doornink?s grand slam lifts offense

The Clintonville American Legion Post 63 Diamond Cats scored in each of the first five innings June 17 during a 12-7 win over Menominee. The offensive outburst helped hide the team’s five errors.

Nick Hogen pitched six innings, allowing nine hits and seven runs (four earned) while striking out four to earn the win. The Diamond Cat offense staked Hogen to a 2-0 lead after one inning. The lead grew to 7-2 after four innings.

A big fifth inning gave Clintonville more of a cushion, as Turner Doornink pounded a grand slam home run as part of the team’s five-run inning.

Menominee got back in the game by scoring three runs in the fifth inning and two in the sixth, but the Clintonville defense tightened up and held them scoreless in the final frame.

Doornink had three hits and five RBIs to lead the offense. Hogen, Parker Mindel and Jansen VanDaalwyk added two hits.

Doornink pitched seven innings while scattering six hits and allowing two earned runs while walking four and striking out six to earn the win over Bonduel.

VanDaalwyk, Mindel and Jake Van Allen had three hits for Clintonville, while Doornink and Zac Riemer had two hits each. The team combined for 15 hits in the game.

Clintonville led 2-1 after one inning and 7-1 after four. The Diamond Cats added two runs in the fifth and three in the seventh while allowing only one run in the bottom of the seventh.

Antigo 5, Clintonville 0
The Diamond Cats started the game with back-to-back singles and a walk to load the bases, but Antigo’s Randy Krebs worked out of the jam by striking out two hitters and inducing a ground out to end the threat.

Krebs went on to retire 17 of the next 20 batters, allowing just one more hit the rest of the way.

Antigo scored two runs in the first inning, two in the second and one in the fourth. Hogen pitched three innings, allowing four earned runs on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

Mindel pitched two innings, allowing three walks and one unearned run. Nathaniel Krueger pitched one inning, allowing one hit and one walk.

Clintonville’s defense committed two errors.

Hogen, Hunter Vollmer and Jaden Doornink had one hit to lead the offense.
