Council approves zoning change

New London City Council approved a zoning change from B-2 (Highway Commercial District) to R-4 (Multiple Family District) on a parcel located behind Walgreens and O’Reilly Auto Parts on the city’s north side.

EMK LLC of New London owns the property.

The zoning change will allow for the construction of three twelve-unit apartment buildings proposed by Premier Real Estate Management LLC.

Zoning Administrator Paul Hanlon said Monday, “They are ready to go from our end.”

The planning and zoning committee brought forth the recommendation to change the zoning at their June 26 meeting.  City council approved the change on the first reading last Tuesday, July 8.

The developer reports they hope to begin construction of the project yet this year.

Building permits to date
Hanlon reports that so far in 2014 building permits issued in New London are slightly down from last year, however there are many projects pending for the remainder of 2014.  “There’s a lot out there yet,” he said Monday.

McDonald’s plans to build a new store directly to the North of their current location, in addition to numerous residential projects slated yet for this year.

As of July 1, 50 residential building permits were issued for projects with an estimated value of $256,074.  Seventeen commercial permits were issued with an estimated value of $621,797, and four manufacturing permits issued with a value of $586,500, for a total construction value of $1,464,372.

Last year at this time, 92 permits were issued (combined through July 1) with a value of $3,467,986.
