Sorensen, Verdell L.

L. Verdell Sorensen, age 96, of Waupaca, WI passed away on Wednesday, August 13, 2014 at her residence under the care of ThedaCare at Home Hospice. 

She was born in Walnut Creek, Nebraska on December 6, 1917, the daughter of the late Carroll and Alverda (Hunsicker) Noble. On June 7, 1942 Verdell married Grant L. Sorensen in Walnut Creek near Inavale, NE. She attended York College in NE and later earned her degree in education at UW-Stevens Point. Verdell was a teacher in rural one room schools in Webster & Franklin Counties, NE, and at Sunnyview, Parfreyville, and Hobart Schools in Waupaca County, WI. She taught first grade for 25 years in the Weyauwega Public Schools. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Waupaca, AAUW and the Lynwood Women’s Club. Grant & Verdell square danced for over 50 years, generating many long lasting friendships. Verdell loved to chronicle daily life and kept a diary for 80 years. Her first entry read, “The humble part I play in life does not much help my self-esteem. But in these diaries that I keep, you’d be surprised how grand I seem.” Her last entry was August 12, 2014. Verdell was a great inspiration with her wealth of positive thinking, perseverance, creativity, and humble gratitude.  

Verdell is survived by her husband: Grant Sorensen, Waupaca; her children: Rheta (Art) Richardson, Waupaca and Errol (Mary) Sorensen, Greenfield, MA; 6 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren and her sister: Sarabelle Graves, Seattle, WA. Also surviving are many nieces & nephews. Verdell was preceded in death by a son, Grant Eugene Sorensen, 3 sisters, Irma West, Velma Golter & Winnie Fitz and 2 brothers, Warren & Walter Noble.  

The Funeral Service will be on Monday, August 18 at 11 AM at the First United Methodist Church, Waupaca with Reverend Dee Ann Woods & Reverend Barry Shaw, officiating. Burial will be in the Lind Center Cemetery. Visitation will be on Sunday evening from 4 to 7 PM at the Holly Funeral Home in Waupaca and also on Monday morning from 10 AM until the time of services at the church. A memorial fund has been established in Verdell’s name. The family wishes to thank Dr. Wenberg, Heidi, Karen, Tammy, Sherry and Lisa and the ThedaCare Hospice team for the wonderful care given to Verdell. Holly Funeral Home in Waupaca is assisting the family with arrangements.
