Comets more aggressive on offense

Now that Chelsea Benitz has a year under her belt as Waupaca’s volleyball coach, the Comets are much farther along then they were at this point last year.

“We’re farther along than a year ago,” Benitz said Aug. 25 after watching her team face Iola-Scandinavia, Weyauwega-Fremont and Medford in a scrimmage at Waupaca High School. “We have a good senior group coming back.”

Those seniors include Christina Rasmussen, Brenna Oleson, Sydney Brooks, Mandy Tomlinson, Alyssa Nicewander, Maleva Butkiewicz and Macie Davidson.

Waupaca will again compete in the Eastern Valley Conference this season with Appleton Xavier, Berlin, Clintonville, Fox Valley Lutheran, Freedom, Little Chute, Ripon and Winneconne.

As with every scrimmage, Benitz saw some good things and not-so-good things in the Comets’ first matchup against other teams.
“We were a little rusty,” she said. “It’s a matter of figuring out what works well. I was glad we were able to be aggressive in our last game,” she said. “We’re really focusing on being a more aggressive offense.”

The Comets will open conference play at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 4, at Ripon. The home opener is Thursday, Sept. 11, against Freedom.
