Schertz, Theodore ?Ted? F.

Theodore “Ted” F. Schertz, age 89 of Clintonville, passed away on Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at the Appleton Medical Center. 

Ted was born on January 24, 1925 in the Township of Lebanon, Waupaca County, the son of the late Frank and Cecilia (Reitzner) Schertz. He graduated from Clintonville High School where he played the position of nose tackle for the Truckers football team. On April 7, 1945, Ted married Frieda Wangelin in Bear Creek. The couple lived in the Township of Bear Creek, Waupaca County for 44 years. There they dairy farmed for 29 years and later cash cropped. Ted also worked for Miller Electric, Appleton for 13 years until retirement. The couple later moved to Clintonville. Frieda preceded her husband in death on December 10, 1998 after 53 years of marriage. Earlier in Ted’s life, he enjoyed softball including pitching and umpiring. He also enjoyed playing cards, hunting, fishing, logging, gardening, following all local sports and helping with his son, Mike’s Christmas tree farm. During the Christmas Season, he also played an awesome Santa Claus. Ted was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Bear Creek/St. Rose Catholic Church, Clintonville, a member of the Bear Creek Lions Club where he served in various offices including President and received the Melvin Jones Award. He had also served on the Township of Bear Creek board as Supervisor. 

Survivors include: his daughters, Barbara Sawall, Clintonville; Sue (Jeff) Hagen, Waupaca; his son, Mike (Rhonda) Schertz, Bear Creek; his grandchildren: Brenda (Milan) Roth, Brian (Carol) Sawall, Nancy (Mike) Berndt, Jennifer Hagen (special friend, Steve Laux), Laura Hagen, Scott Hagen, Heather (Cody) Bessette and Jake Schertz; his great-grandchildren: Ashley Reddy (special friend, Ben Coon), Austin (Cyndel) Sawall, Jared Sawall, Emily Sawall, Chris Berndt, Melissa Berndt and Chloe Bessette; his great-great-grandson, Anthony Coon; his brothers, Robert (Shirley) Schertz and James (Joyce) Schertz, Clintonville; his brother-in-law, Roland “Joe” Clinton, Bear Creek; and numerous nieces and nephews He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Frieda, a daughter Mary Ann in infancy, his sister Dorothy Clinton and his son-in-law Robert Sawall. 

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, September 22, 2014 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Bear Creek with the Rev. John “Jack” Mullarkey and Deacon Lincoln Wood officiating. Interment will be in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Bear Creek Friends may call from 4 until 7 p.m. Sunday at the Eberhardt-Stevenson Funeral Home & Crematory, Clintonville and after 10 a.m. Monday at the church until the time of the service. A Parish Prayer service will be held 7 p.m. Sunday evening at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Schertz family for a memorial to be established at a later date.
