T-Birds rebound from loss

Iola-Scandinavia’s volleyball team picked up a Central Wisconsin 8 Conference win Sept. 30 over Stevens Point Pacelli.

The Thunderbirds won all three games, 25-20, 25-21, 25-16.

“After a frustrating loss the week before to Bonduel, the girls answered in their play with Pacelli with maturity and drive,” coach Jessica Wennesberg said. “Sometimes, it takes a hard loss to help a team move forward as it needs to. I feel we did just that. The team spirit and focus was what it needed to be. We didn’t miss a serve all night, our passing was spot-on, we communicated and stayed unified. It was a great win and just what we needed as we head into the latter part of our season.”

Kaylin Ellioff led the team with seven kills, while Megan Mazemke added six. Setter Kylie Johnson and Emily Kroseberg had 12 and 11 assists, respectively.

“The passing of Brianne Huettner, Holly Boyle and Jayden Podgorny was key to our ability to control the play,” Wennesberg said. “Brianne led the night with five digs, Holly had three and Jayden had two.

“Kaylie Peterson had a great night,” she added. “She played tough and smart at the net. Sometimes, the way she can play so flawlessly on tight rallies amazes me. She’s a great asset to our team.”

The T-Birds headed to Wittenberg-Birnamwood Oct. 7 for the final CWC-8 dual match of the season. I-S will host Wild Rose at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9, before opening CWC-8 pool play at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, at a location to be determined.
