Little Chute cruises over Waupaca

Home field advantage wasn’t much of an advantage for the Waupaca football team in the Comets’ final home game of the regular season.

The Comets fell to Little Chute 42-7 Oct. 10 in a matchup of playoff-bound Eastern Valley Conference teams.

Little Chute struck first, as Sam Schepp intercepted a Joe Ogden pass less than three minutes into the game and returned it to the end zone.

The lead didn’t last long, however, as Christian Overman put the Comets on the board on the ensuing kickoff with a 90-yard return.

However, that turned out to be Waupaca’s only score of the night, as Little Chute quarterback Sam Merryfield threw for four touchdowns, including three in the first half that gave the Mustangs a 35-7 halftime lead.

Merryfield added another touchdown pass in the third quarter and the Mustangs kept the Comets off the scoreboard the rest of the way.

Little Chute had a 121-84 advantage in rushing yards and outgained the Comets 300-47 through the air.

Waupaca fell to 5-3 on the season and 5-2 in conference play with the loss, while Little Chute is 6-2 overall and 5-2 in conference play.

Waupaca will wrap up the regular season at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17, at Appleton Xavier.
