Comets third at Bay Port Invite

Waupaca’s volleyball team placed third Oct. 11 at the Bay Port Invitational and also picked up an Eastern Valley Conference win Oct. 9 over Little Chute.

Bay Port Invitational

HOWARD – The Comets fell to Hortonville (13-25, 13-25), fell to Appleton West (12-25, 25,23, 11-15), defeated Kewaunee (25-20, 25-23), fell to Bay Port (22,25, 11-25) and defeated New London (25-20, 25-17) to finish third overall.

“We played a very good Hortonville team right away and were a little down after that coming into the first game against Appleton West,” coach Chelsea Benitz said. “We picked it up the second game, but got off to too slow of a start in the third. Fifteen points goes quick.

“We came back to beat Kewaunee in two, who had beaten Appleton West,” she said. “Based on win-loss percentage and point deferential, we were put in the gold bracket and played Bay Port the first round. We lost to them, putting us in the third-place match, where we came out ahead of New London.”

Waupaca 3, Little Chute 1

WAUPACA – The Comets defeated the Mustangs 25-16, 25-23, 27-29, 25-23.

“Tina Rasmussen, our outside hitter, played very well for us (13 kills), as did Maleva Butkiewicz (nine kills), who had to step in and play the back row for us tonight as our back row player, Abigail Wolfram, is out for the season with an ankle injury,” Benitz said. “It was tough seeing her on the bench and not being able to practice with us. She’s incredibly competitive and keeps the team motivated, but Maleva stepped up and played well.”

Macie Davidson had eight blocks and Mandy Tomlinson and Alyssa Nicewander had 22 and 21 digs, respectively. Nicewander added 35 assists.

The Comets played at Appleton Xavier Oct. 14 and will wrap up the regular season at 6:30 tonight (Thursday, Oct. 14) at home against Fox Valley Lutheran.
