Coffeehouse, bakery opens in Manawa

Coffee, bakery and smoked meats will be offered at a new establishment in downtown Manawa.

Oh My Goodness will offer specialty coffees, scratch bakery and house-smoked meats.

“It’s a strange combination, but that’s what we both love so that’s what we’re doing,” said co-owner Kirby Linjer.

He and his wife, Deb, hope to open Oh My Goodness by mid-October.

“It’s taking longer than we expected,” Kirby said.

The delay is due to equipment issues, he explained.

Four years ago, the Linjers opened Sun Dawg Diner in the same location, 343 S. Bridge St.

That was immediately after Kirby retired from the Oshkosh State Correctional Institution. For the past year, he was employed by Behavioral Interventions, a private company.

“I was never home,” he said.

So he retired again.

Deb retired from OSCI on July 18.

“After 25 years of working in the prison system, I needed a change,” she said.

Although a variety of coffees and fresh bakery will be available, Oh My Goodness does not serve breakfast.

The hours will be 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. weekdays and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on weekends.

The specialty drinks will include frappuccinos, mochas, cappuccinos, lattes, iced coffee and fruit smoothies.

“There’s a real knack to making perfect coffee drinks,” Kirby said.

It also takes a knack to make pastries, which is Deb’s specialty.

Daily offerings will include homemade cinnamon rolls, carrot cake or carrot cake muffins, apple crisp and a pie-of-the-day.

“Deb is quite well known for her pies,” Kirby said.

There will also be specialty seasonal items, such as rosettes, krumkake, sandbakkels and kolaches, a Czechoslovakian fluffy breakfast pastry with sweetened cheese filling.

Everything will be “made with love from scratch,” according to Deb.

The Linjers will offer a relaxed atmosphere where customers may enjoy coffee on a couch next to a fireplace. Free Wi-Fi will also be available.

“It’s just another service that we offer,” Kirby said.
