Xavier tops Waupaca in finale

Appleton Xavier handed the Comets a 30-7 loss Oct. 17 in the final regular season game at Rocky Bleier Field in Appleton. 

Xavier finished the season 7-1 in the Eastern Valley Conference and 8-1 overall, while Waupaca fell to 5-3 in the EVC and 5-4 overall.

The Hawks scored on their first two possessions and took a 14-0 lead into halftime before adding a touchdown in the third and fourth quarters.

Waupaca’s score came on Joe Ogden’s quarterback keeper with 50 seconds remaining in the game.

The Comets are placed in Division 3 for the playoffs, with Level 1 games to be played Friday and Saturday, Oct. 24-25.

Waupaca’s eight-team bracket includes Berlin, Luxemburg-Casco, Green Bay Notre Dame, Plymouth, Seymour, West De Pere and Xavier.

Other area teams qualifying for the playoffs are Hortonville in Division 2; Amherst and Iola-Scandinavia in Division 5; and Almond-Bancroft and Wild Rose in Division 7.
