Comets go one and out in playoffs

Going up against one of the state’s premier football programs turned out to be too much to handle for the Waupaca Comets.

West De Pere scored touchdowns on its first six possessions and cruised to a 56-14 win in a Division 3 Level 1 matchup on the Phantoms’ home field.

Stephen Johnson caught a 20-yard touchdown pass with 2:37 remaining in the first quarter that tied the game at 7-7, but the Phantoms found the end zone six times in the second quarter, including twice in the final two minutes of the half, to take a 49-7 lead at the break.

A running clock in the second half helped keep West De Pere from adding to its lead.

Ogden scored Waupaca’s final touchdown on a 1-yard quarterback keeper with 2:34 remaining in the game.

Waupaca finished its season at 5-5, while the Phantoms advanced to Level 2 and will host the winner of the Appleton Xavier/Seymour game.
