The Comets trailed 34-16 heading into the fourth quarter, but outscored the Indians 22-7 over the final eight minutes and had a chance to tie the game at the end.

Waupaca took a 7-3 lead into the second quarter, but Berlin outscored the Comets 20-7 to take a 23-14 halftime lead.

The Indians held the Comets to one basket in the third quarter, but Waupaca began chipping away at the lead with a 14-2 run that cut the lead to 36-30.

The Comets trimmed the lead to 40-38 with 11 seconds remaining and got the ball back with 6.8 seconds remaining after Julia Silloway missed a free throw.

Waupaca set up a game-tying shot, but Taylor Vaughn’s shot was just off the mark as time expired.

Davidson led Waupaca with 17 points, while Nowak added 14.

“We weren’t down by a terrible amount at halftime,” coach Amanda Bronk said. “We’ve been down worse than this before. I think what we have is a fourth-quarter drive. The girls started to see things clicking. They know they have the speed to get the ball down. It surprised us all, but we know they have it in them.

“There’s nothing better as a coach than to see these girls fight for four quarters and come back with such tenacity and energy at the end of the game,” she added. “It may not be a ‘W,’ but it’s a win in our book because this is what we’re looking for.”

The Comets are relying on the varsity experience of Davidson, a senior, and Nowak, a sophomore.

“We’re looking at Macie and Victoria as the varsity returners from last year to help lead and guide the team because they’ve been in varsity games before and under that pressure,” Bronk said. “Macie’s been a great leader for our girls this year. She came out a little late, but she’s really fallen into place and stepped up to be a leader. Her and Victoria, as the returners, have shown some great mentorship to our new girls.”

The two-point loss came two weeks after the Comets lost their opener to Fox Valley Lutheran by 67 points.

“We’ve moved beyond that,” Bronk said. “We come in with high expectations of our girls to play well and never quit. The comment from the FVL coach was, ‘Your girls played all the way to that last buzzer.’ We don’t think about that game anymore and we’re getting better and better every day.”
