That’s what Waupaca boys’ basketball coach Ron Weber is calling the 2014-15 version of the Comets.
The Comets are off to an 0-2 start after falling to New London 73-57 Dec. 5 and opening Eastern Valley Conference play Dec. 2 with an 83-68 loss at Appleton Xavier.
“We’re a work in progress,” Weber said. “We’re learning every minute we’re out there. We have some guys that are beginning basketball players. Not just varsity level, but all levels. This group is new for me, too. We’re finding out what works, what doesn’t work.”
Although there are several new faces on the roster, there’s also senior Brando Vasquez, a starter since his freshman season. He scored 23 points against Xavier and followed that up with 22 against New London, despite being in foul trouble early in the game.
“It’s no secret that Brando has to be special for us to compete,” Weber said. “We can’t have him battling fouls. It’s going to be tough for us to compete against very good teams.”

APPLETON – The Hawks hit 14 of 30 three-pointers and led 21-15 after one quarter, 43-33 at halftime and 68-52 after three quarters.
Vasquez led all scorers with 23 points, while Blackwell and Jacob Ewald added 20 and 12, respectively.
The Comets played at Fox Valley Lutheran Dec. 9 and will host Winneconne at 7:15 p.m. Friday, Dec. 12. That home opener kicks off a four-game home stand that also includes games against Denmark, Little Chute and Merrill.
“The kids are giving me what they’ve got,” Weber said. “I’m really pleased with the kids we have and the effort they’re giving me, the team spirit we have. Because of that, I think we can get better. That’s what it’s all about.
“We’re going to get better every day as long as they come to practice with the right attitude,” he added. “It’s up to them to analyze their game and it’s up to the coaches to tell them where they broke down and devise drills and strategies to try to overcome that.”
