Comets beat Pacelli

Mosinee and Appleton United picked up boys’ hockey wins Jan. 9-10 over Waupaca at the Community Parks Hockey Classic.

Meanwhile, the Comets ended Stevens Point Pacelli’s six-game winning streak with a 6-5 nonconference win over the Cardinals Jan. 6.

Mosinee 1, Waupaca 1 (OT)

The Comets and Indians skated to a 1-1 tie in the opening game of the four-team tournament at the K.B. Willett Arena, but Mosinee notched the win with a pair of goals in a shootout.

Ben Stone put Waupaca on the board off of an assist from Nick Grams and Frankie Ellingson 44 seconds into the second period, but Mosinee tied the game less than a minute later on a Matthew Sprink goal.

Neither team scored in regulation or in an eight-minute overtime period, but Landon Stepan and Zeth Pyan scored shootout goals for Mosinee.

Comet goalie Walker Smith finished with 53 saves.

Appleton United 4, Waupaca 0

United blanked the Comets in the consolation game behind two goals from Matthew Gruber and one from Nathan and Connor Zilisch.

Smith had 48 saves for the Comets.

Waupaca 6, Pacelli 5

Stone and Austin Erickson each scored twice for Waupaca and Ellingson and Max Menzies also found the net.

Smith finished with 28 saves.

Waupaca will host Lakeland at 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, at the Waupaca Ice & Expo Center before heading to Tomahawk Tuesday, Jan. 20.
