Indians hang on to beat Chiefs

Blake Hudziak’s game-high 26 points helped the Weyauwega-Fremont boys’ basketball team pick up a 57-52 Central Wisconsin 8 Conference win Jan. 23 over Shiocton.

The game went down to the wire after Shiocton erased a 12-point deficit. The Chiefs took a 9-8 advantage into the second quarter, but the Indians outscored the visitors 18-12 over the next eight minutes to take a 26-21 halftime lead.

Hudziak scored five of the Indians’ first seven points of the third quarter and W-F took its biggest lead, 33-21.
Shiocton chipped away at the lead, but still trailed 39-34 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Chiefs opened the fourth quarter with an 8-2 run and briefly had a 42-41 lead, but a Hudziak three-pointer gave the Indians the lead for good.

Shiocton trimmed the lead to two points twice in the final 25 seconds, but never got any closer.

Another Hudziak basket with 2.1 seconds remaining pushed the lead back to five and sealed the win.

Bryce Akey also finished in double figures for the Indians with 10 points, while Nathan Schmidt led the Chiefs with 23.

The Indians will host Manawa at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27, before hosting Amherst at 8:15 p.m. Friday, Jan. 31.
