I-S girls pummel WVL Wolves 65-10

The Iola-Scandinavia girls’ basketball team’s Central Wisconsin 8 Conference rematch with Bonduel has been put on hold.

The Thunderbirds were originally scheduled to host the undefeated Bears Jan. 22, but the junior varsity and varsity games will now be played Saturday, Jan. 31, in Iola. The JV game is set for 2 p.m., with the varsity game to follow at 3:30 p.m.

I-S improved to 8-5 on the season Jan. 20 with a 65-10 nonconference win over Wisconsin Valley Lutheran.

It didn’t take long for the T-Birds to take control of the game, as I-S outscored the Wolves 28-3 in the first quarter before building a 42-8 halftime lead.

The T-Bird defense also held the Wolves scoreless in the third quarter and to two points in the fourth quarter.

Brooke Phillips and Leighten Fischer, who came into the game as the CWC-8’s top two leading scorers at 14.8 and 14.4 points per game, respectively, led the T-Birds. Phillips finished with a game-high 26 points and added seven rebounds and five steals, while Fischer chipped in with 14 points and six rebounds.

Kylie Johnson added eight points, four assists and four steals, while Megan Mazemke finished with seven points and seven rebounds.

The T-Birds returned to CWC-8 play Jan. 27 at Wittenberg-Birnamwood and will host Stevens Point Pacelli at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30.
