Waupaca girls get first win

The Waupaca girls’ basketball team broke into the win column for the first time this season Jan. 20 with a 37-30 nonconference win over Tomahawk.

The winning streak didn’t last long, however, as the Comets dropped their next two games to Berlin and Adams-Friendship.

Adams-Friendship 60, Waupaca 13

University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Emma Roennenburg scored a game-high 28 points Jan. 24 to lead the Green Devils over the Comets.

A-F held Waupaca to five or fewer points in each quarter and led 19-2 after one quarter, 28-4 at halftime and 52-9 after three quarters.

Victoria Nowak led Waupaca with 11 points.

Berlin 42, Waupaca 33

Nowak had 25 points, seven rebounds and five blocked shots in an Eastern Valley Conference loss to the Indians Jan. 22.

Berlin led 7-3 after one quarter and 23-9 at halftime, but Waupaca outscored the home team 9-7 in the third quarter and 15-12 over the final eight minutes.

Macie Davidson had eight points for the Comets, while Julia Silloway hit five three-pointers and finished with a team-high 24 points for Berlin.

Waupaca 37, Tomahawk 30

The Comets prevailed in a matchup of winless teams.

Tomahawk took a 13-11 lead into the second quarter, but the Comets came back with a 9-2 advantage in the second quarter to take a 20-15 halftime lead.

Waupaca outscored the Hatchets 8-3 in the third quarter, but the home team cut into the lead with a 12-9 advantage in the fourth quarter.

Davidson and Nowak led the Comets with 14 and 12 points, respectively.

The Comets hosted Winneconne Jan. 27 and will play at Appleton Xavier Friday, Jan. 30.
