Waupaca Area wins regular-season finale

Brianne Huettner scored twice and teammates Markie Ash and Mandy Tomlinson added a goal and two assists each as the team wrapped up the regular season Feb. 13 with a 4-1 Great Northern Conference win over Tomahawk at the Waupaca Ice & Expo Center.

Waupaca Area will now host Fond du Lac at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, at the Expo in the first round of the state tournament. The winner of that game will likely see defending state champion Green Bay East in the second round.

The win over the Hatchets also gave the team the chance to celebrate the program’s first-ever Great Northern Conference championship in front of its home fans after the team wrapped up at least a share of the title Feb. 7 with a 9-0 win over Lakeland in Minocqua.

Waupaca Area finished with an 11-1 mark in league play and is 22-2 overall.

Erika Vallier put the Hatchets on the board late in the first period, but Huettner and Ash added goals in a 41-second stretch in the final minute of the period to give the home team a 2-1 advantage at the break.

Huettner found the net for a second time for the game’s only goal of the second period, while Tomlinson, one of the leading scorers in the state this season, capped the scoring in the third period with her goal.

Waupaca Area outshot the Hatchets 45-15.
