Comet duo heading to wrestling sectional

The season is still alive for two Waupaca wrestlers.

Mitchell Rotta and Blake Thoe placed second at 160 and 285 pounds, respectively, Feb. 14 at a WIAA Division 2 regional meet at Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School.

Both wrestlers will now compete Saturday, Feb. 21, at the Oconto Falls Sectional and must place in the top three to advance to the State Individual Wrestling Meet.

Rotta and Thoe made it to their respective championship matches.

Rotta advanced to his title match against with an 18-1 technical fall of Nekoosa/Wisconsin Rapids Assumption/Port Edwards’ Noah Peckham in the second round, while Wittenberg-Birnamwood’s Hunter Kreger advanced to the final by pinning Tomahawk’s Blake Mueller in 2:55 in the semifinals.

Kreger got the win after Rotta was disqualified for an illegal slam. However, Rotta was able to continue in the tournament and pinned Mueller in the wrestleback round in 3:27 to place second.

Meanwhile, Thoe handed Nekoosa/Wisconsin Rapids Assumption/Port Edwards’ Casey Smith an 18-6 loss n the semifinals. That set up a championship match with Tomahawk’s Jake Borchardt and Borchardt held on for a 6-5 win.

Also placing for Waupaca were Tanner Johnson, third at 113; Logan Bernhardt, third at 120; Derrick Rotta, third at 152; and Vince Ellie, third at 170;

Team scores were W-B (254), Nekoosa/Wisconsin Rapids Assumption/Port Edwards (211), Tomahawk (193), Waupaca (127.5), Mosinee (109) and Lakeland (84.5).
