Public works director resigns

John Edlebeck has resigned as Waupaca’s public works director, effective the end of April.

His resignation was announced by Mayor Brian Smith toward the end of the March 17 common council meeting.

Edlebeck, who has been the city’s public works director for almost 19 years, is leaving to become the public works director in Whitefish Bay, a Milwaukee suburb.

He begins his new position on May 1.

“You’ve given us many good years,” Smith said, “and we’re much better because of you.”

The director of public works is a department head position in Waupaca, which means it is an appointment by the mayor.

City Administrator Henry Veleker told the common council about Edlebeck’s resignation in an email, sent prior to the March 17 meeting.

“In the best of cases, we’re looking three to four months to fill the position,” Veleker said. “Next to finance director, public works is the hardest position to fill in municipal government.
