School bus crash in New London

By John Faucher

A serious accident involving a passenger car and a New London school bus occurred shortly after 7 a.m. Tuesday on State Highway 54 in the town of Mukwa.

The crash occurred about 200 yards east of the Pine Tree Supper Club.

According to witnesses at the scene, both vehicles were traveling eastbound.

It appears the driver of the car was blinded by the sun, and rear-ended the school bus. The car then veered to the right and struck a driveway culvert at E7989 State 54.

No children injured

Joe Marquardt, Business Services Manager for the School District of New London said there were eight students and the driver on the bus at the time of the accident.

“All students and the driver were released from the scene by emergency personnel and are not at school. All school offices have been notified of the students riding and parents have also been called,” Marquardt said.

State 54 remained closed during the Tuesday morning commute.

The driver of the car was airlifted by ThedaStar helicopter and taken to an area hospital.

The New London Fire Department used the Jaws of Life unit to free the victim. New London First Responders, Gold Cross Ambulance, and the Waupaca County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the scene.

The accident remains under investigation.
